Linfield 1-0 Glentoran

Sat, 14/09/2019 - 22:33

An 86th minute winner cost Glentoran what would have been at least a deserved draw in the season’s first “Big Two” match. But while late goals proved consistently costly last season, the manner of this defeat was very different in a game where resolute defending and strong, fast forward play again demonstrated the clear improvement in the Glens and our ability to compete much more effectively with the league’s better sides this season.

First team breakthrough for more young Glens

Wed, 11/09/2019 - 19:49

This week’s 3-1 win over Ballyclare Comrades marked another clear demonstration of the vital importance of the Glentoran Academy, in producing first team players of both the present and future. In addition to Paul O’Neill, Mal Smith and James McCarthy all establishing themselves as first teamers this season, the Ballyclare game saw a first team debut for Lewis McGarvey, a return for Salou Jallow and a debut for Charlie Lindsay as the youngest ever Glentoran first-team player. Last but not least, we saw first senior goals from Mal and Salou.

Glentoran manager, Mick McDermott again rang the changes for the visit of Ballyclare Comrades in tonight's Toals Co Antrim Shield tie at a wet Oval.

There was a first team debut for Lewis McGarvey at right back, a first start in the centre of defence for Cameron Stewart and the return of Salou Jallow. Young players, Mal Smith and James McCarthy were also in the starting XI.

Back to the Oval for the Glentoran Greats

Mon, 09/09/2019 - 12:19

As our club embarks on a new, exciting era it was very happy before Saturday’s match against Larne, to welcome back onto the Oval pitch and to recognise some of the greatest players ever to represent Glentoran. Before the match the guys all had a get together in the Ron Manley Suite, a very fitting location as no fewer than eleven of these players had been teammates of Yorkie.

The 25 men present on Saturday represented every Championship or Irish Cup winning team as far back as 1964 and the club’s run to the European Cup Winners’ Cup Quarter Final in 1973/74.
