Glentoran supporters were in need of a lift following a dismal run of results over the Christmas and New Year period and they got it tonight with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Ards in the Tennents Irish Cup, with Chris Lavery netting a hattrick in a 'Man of the Match' home debut.
Support the Glens’ Irish Cup Defence
Glentoran make a delayed start to our Tennent’s Irish Cup defence on Tuesday night at 7.45pm with the rearranged home tie against our near neighbours, Championship 1 league leaders Ards.
On a weekend in which half the Dankse Bank Premiership fixtures fell victim to the wintry conditions Crusaders weathered an early Glentoran storm to fight back and win 4-2 at Seaview this afternoon. The Glens raced into a deserved 2-0 lead with a Curtis Allen double but were pegged back with two goals just before the interval and Crusaders then dominated from that point. Alan Kernaghan made three changes to the team that lost on New Year’s Day at Dungannon with Steven Gordon missing out through suspension while Jonathan Smith and Niall Henderson dropped to the bench.
Focus returns to Danske Bank Premiership action as the Glens travel to league leaders Crusaders this weekend.
Alan Kernaghan’s men were forced to stall their Irish Cup defence last week due to a waterlogged pitch at the Oval. Their fifth round tie has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, 19th January (kick-off 7:45pm) and a home tie against Glenavon awaits in the next round for the winners.
The 2016 / 17 Season is another special year for Glentoran FC as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the historic exploits of the Detroit Cougars squad both at home and in the USA.
To mark this anniversary the 2016/17 Kappa Away shirt will have a special design with the names of our Cougars legends incorporated.
Ards or Glentoran will have a home tie against Glenavon in the next round of the Tennents Irish Cup.
Glentoran and Ards will meet at the Oval on Tuesday 19th January 2016 (kick-off 7:45pm) to play their 5th round tie.
