Obituary: Ted Brownlee

Fri, 07/07/2017 - 21:52

The whole club was saddened to learn of Ted Brownlee's passing earlier today and extend our deepest sympathies to his family; wife Valerie, daughters Allison, Heather & Lynne and son Ian and assure them that they are in our thoughts and prayers.

Ted, who was 76, was a lifelong Glentoran supporter. He and club president, David Chick started watching the Glens from a very young age travelling from the Downshire area of the Cregagh Road. Ted followed David onto the board in the late 1980's where he served as both a director and as Chairman before stepping down due to ill health. Ted served on many committees including those involved in fundraising and was involved with the club programme, the Glentoran Gazette. He was a stalwart for the Glens over a number of decades representing the club on various committees, giving his time freely for Glentoran and providing advice to other club officials. He will be greatly missed.

Current Chairman Stephen Henderson paid his own tribute to Ted Brownlee, "I was fortunate to have known Ted when we were both members of the Glentoran Supporters Committee (1923) before he joined the board. He was an intelligent, shrewd and street wise man. Glentoran to the core, his sense of humour, humility and passion for the club shone through and his wisdom, experience and guidance will be sorely missed by us all."

Funeral arrangements: Ted's funeral srevice is at 1pm on Tuesday 11th July at St Finnians Church, Cregagh Road.
