Comber Rec Ladies 0-18 Glentoran Women

Tue, 14/05/2024 - 00:18

The free scoring Glens commenced their quest for this year’s Toal’s Women’s County Antrim Cup with this heavy away win over NIWFA Championship side Comber Rec this evening. No fewer than 11 Glens players hit the scoresheet.

Kim Turner used this evening’s game to give first team debuts to young players Lily Jeffrey, Rhianna Brady, Kirsten Farley, with Clodagh Maguire, Sophie McKnight, Beth Donnan and Amy Majury on the subs bench.

Kirsten Farley’s debut completed a quite remarkable family double as her brother Callan make his first team debut for the men’s team 2 weeks ago – the first brother/sister combo to play senior football for the club.

The Glens were 2-0 ahead after 7 minutes, both goals from last season’s league top scorer Kerry Beattie. This started a first half avalanche with goals from Keenan and Kerr (both 12th minute), Andrews, Wilson and Farley plus an own goal to take the visitors in 8-0 up at the break.

Rachel Rogan, Jenna McKearney and Clodagh Maguire were all introduced at half time and contributed 8 goals between them including 4 from Rogan (2 add to her brace as sub last week) and 3 from McKearney. The scoring was completed by Rachel McIntyre and skipper for the evening Kelly Bailie.

So a very encouraging night for these young players and a glimpse of a very exciting future for Glentoran Women.
