In a part of the city of Belfast overflowing with iconic imagery, Glentoran Football Club is both proud and honoured to launch the team’s 2017/18 home playing strip in the front room of number 16 Burren Way.

Thirty-five years ago, this summer, Glentoran heralded the arrival of their new look 1982 shirt with the inclusion of George Best in the side to meet Manchester United at the Oval.

A boyhood supporter of his local club, George would go on to be known as the most famous ever “one who got away”. For one day only though, he would get to wear the colours of his childhood heroes.

1982/83 was a big season, Johnny Jameson and Jim Cleary returned to the Oval from the Boy’s Own adventure of Northern Ireland’s exploits in the World Cup Finals in Spain, Glentoran celebrated 100 years of playing football

east of the Lagan, Manley, Mullan and Jameson would net sixty-six goals between them concluding with an Irish Cup Final victory at the Oval in a game memorably patrolled by a cockerel.

Alex “Hurricane” Higgins won the World Professional Snooker Championship for the second time, the last DeLorean rolled off the production line in the city and Best sported the radical, new look of Glentoran.

In a tribute, both to east Belfast’s most famous sporting son and to a legendary Glentoran side laced with names still revered today on the terraces, we are delighted to unveil this season’s Glentoran home kit with

a pilgrimage by the current squad to the childhood home of George Best.

This modern take on a retro classic, brought to you by our equipment partners Kappa is sure to be a popular choice amongst both players and supporters alike. The striped styling tracing its lineage all the way back to the blazers

of Phoenix Cricket Club from Dublin, whose chance meeting with the fledgling Glentoran side in a Belfast hostelry during the summer of 1882 prompted the selection of our now famous colours.

To wear this season’s Glentoran shirt is to truly stand on the shoulders of giants.
