Glentoran's penalty shoot-out win

Wed, 31/10/2018 - 20:02

Glentoran have waited 7 years to win a penalty shoot-out at the Oval....but we finally did it again last night.

The last time was back on 7th July 2011 when we defeated Macedonian side, FK Renova on penalties in a Europa League qualifying game.

Aaron Hogg was the goalkeeping hero that night, Elliott Morris having been red carded in the away leg when we lost 2-1 in Skopje.

Glentoran won the return game 2-1 thanks to a couple of spectacular goals from Richard Clarke and Martin Murray.

We won that penalty shoot-out by the same score as last night, 3-2. You can relive the drama from 2011 by clicking HERE.

Although we defeated Larne in extra-time earlier this season, in the intervening years since 2011 our home record in cup games which have gone beyond the 90 minutes has been abysmal.

2016-17

7th Jan 2017              Lost 1-2 to Linfield in the Irish Cup

25th Oct 2016           Lost 1-2 to Crusaders in the Co Antrin Shield

2015-16

22nd Sept 2015        Lost 4-3 on pens at home to H&W Welders in the Co Antrin Shield

2013-14

8th Oct 2013             Lost 4-2 on pens home to Linfield in League Cup

We've had a little more success away from the Oval with wins at Ballyclare, Institute & Loughgall and of course in the 2013 Irish Cup final victory over Cliftonville at the National Stadium.

Last night we finally made it through an extra time cup tie thanks to strikes from Curtis Allen, Chris Gallagher and Joe Crowe.

Andrew McCarroll's photographs here capture the joy perfectly.

With the Glens leading 3-2 Arron Burns steps up.

His effort hits the woodwork.

The celebrations begin.
