Glentoran 4-1 Institute

Thu, 01/01/2015 - 20:09

Glentoran kicked off 2015 with an emphatic 4-1 win over Institute at the Oval. Goals from David Scullion and Danny McKee saw the Glens lead 2-nil at the break. Jordan Stewart and a second from David Scullion sealed the 3 points for the Glens although Robbie Hume did pull a goal back for the visitors.

Institute had the first attempt on goal with just 4 minutes gone. The Drumahoe side won a corner but when Aaron Walsh found Ronan Doherty, he fired wide of the target. 10 minutes in and the Glens went in front. The home side were awarded a free kick following a foul on Steven Gordon. It was taken quickly and Jordan Stewart found Marcus Kane. Kane’s low ball into the area was turned in from close range by the alert David Scullion. On 21 minutes Willie Garrett came close to doubling Glentoran’s advantage. A foul on Niall Henderson resulted in a free kick 25 yards from goal. Garrett stepped up but his shot was inches over the crossbar. Moments later Martin Gallagher in the ‘Stute goal did really well to intercept a cross from the right from Jordan Stewart. Although Glentoran were dominating the majority of the game at this stage, Institute were still causing the odd problem on the break. On 27 minutes Matty Young had a chance to equalise but was denied by a terrific block by Marcus Kane. Just before the half hour mark Glentoran scored their second. Steven Gordon put the keeper under pressure by chasing down a long ball. Gallagher’s rushed clearance went straight to Barry Holland who immediately shot towards the empty goal. A retreating ‘Stute defender managed to prevent the ball going in but in doing so was only able to turn it into the path of Danny McKee and the young striker, in for the suspended Curtis Allen, made no mistake.

Holland found Gordon down the right wing on 32 minutes but his cross-shot landed on the roof of the net. A cross from Scullion was then almost turned into his own net by Dean Curry; the ball flashing inches wide of the post. As half-time approached the home fans were treated to a delightful move involving Kane, Scullion and Stewart however the final ball into the danger zone was cleared for a throw in. McKee and Scullion then had efforts on goal blocked in quick succession before McKee was presented with a great opportunity in first half stoppage time. Stephen McAlorum’s volleyed clearance put McKee clear. He controlled the ball well initially but a poor touch then allowed the ball to get away from him. He did manage to round the keeper but the ball crossed the by-line for a goal kick.

Institute upped their game at the start of the second half and Declan McKeever spurned a great opportunity to pull a goal back when he completely mis-kicked inside the area on 47 minutes. 2 minutes later Paul McVeigh was denied by Elliott Morris; Johnny Addis mopping up behind him. Moments later Robbie Hume also got a shot away but again it was well off target. Glentoran with the wind at their backs and attacking the Sydenham End in the second half forced a couple of corners. The second one was cleared for a throw-in which was taken by Addis. His long throw into the danger area was flicked on by both Kane and McKee. The keeper failed to collect the ball at the far post and it fell kindly at the feet of Jordan Stewart who had the simple task of helping it over the line for his 10th goal of the season. On 56 minutes McKee’s dangerous cross was cleared to McAlorum. He fired goalwards but Gallagher got down well to make the save.

Henderson and Scullion were then both denied before Institute pulled a goal back. David Scullion conceded a free kick 25 yards from goal. Robbie Hume stepped up and fired the ball over the defensive wall and beyond Elliott Morris. The goal lifted the visitors and Glentoran were forced to clear their lines on several occasions. On 70 minutes Stewart lifted the ball over the ‘Stute defence for Steven Gordon to run on to but his shot was turned round the post by Gallagher. From the resulting corner Marcus Kane’s header went well over the bar. Willie Garrett then had a similar opportunity from another corner but his headed effort went straight into Martin Gallagher’s arms. Substitute, Jamie McIntyre fired wide for Institute on 82 minutes. From the goal kick Glentoran went straight down the other end. David Scullion picked the ball up near the right hand corner of the 18 yard box and cut inside the defender before smashing the ball past Gallagher. Five minutes from time Glentoran almost grabbed a fifth. Scullion’s cross to the back post was met by Stephen Gordon but Gallagher produced a fine stop to deny him.
