Friday semi final for Glens Women

Wed, 13/09/2023 - 23:19

On Friday evening Glentoran Women continue their quest for a remarkable fifth consecutive Electric Ireland Challenge Cup (Irish Cup) with a semi-final v Sion Swifts Ladies at Stangmore Park, Dungannon.

This is a replay of last season’s final. On that occasion the Glens ran out 2-1 winners through first half goals from Jess Foy and Joely Andrews.

Swifts are currently fourth in the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership. Four places behind the Glens. Most recent league meeting between the 2 sides was at Ashfield 3 weeks ago when in one of our most keenly contested  games of the season, Glens ran out 3-1 winners due to a Kerry Beattie hat trick.  When Glentoran travelled to Strabane in May, we came back with a 0-3 win through a double from Emily Wilson and a penalty from top scorer Beattie.

Head Coach Kim Turner said ahead of Friday’s game: “We are looking forward to Friday night, we are the holders of the cup and its one we have set out to retain.

We feel prepared and the players have trained well this week. The team are fit, mentally in a great place and we have a full squad ready to play.

Sion are an organised side and a team where we know we have to be at our best when we play them.

This is a cup game where the league table doesn't matter, but I'm confident our form and preparation along with a lot of hard work will get us through the tie. These are the games we look forward to”.

This neutral venue is in Swifts’ home county so the girls and their coaches would love the best possible support from the Glentoran Family as they seek to secure a historic achievement in this cup.

Kick Off at Stangmore Park is at 7.30pm.
