Player of the Month for Paul and Lewis

Fri, 05/04/2019 - 22:04

Consistent hard work and two excellent opening goals have earned Paul O'Neill a clear win in the Supporters Glentoran Player of the Month vote for March.

With Darren Murray initially suspended, Paul came into the starting line up at Ballymena between Curtis Allen and Robbie McDaid and opened the scoring with a great finish and followed up last week with a very different opener, a very convincing header that gave the Cliftonville keeper no chance.

The past few Glentoran managers and his Academy and U20 coaches have had great hopes for Paul since he came to the oval as a fifteen year old. Now at nineteen he has really taken his chance this season and we all look forward to seeing him go from strength to strength in a Glens shirt.

Paul won 44%  of the vote this month with Gavin Peers runner up with 26%. Robbie McDaid - winner in January and February was shortlisted as was skipper Marcus Kane following his successful switch to centre back alongside Peers.

Congratulations Paul.

Player of the Month winners so far this season have been:

August                      Conor Pepper

September                Conor Pepper

October                    Cricky Gallagher

November                No winner

December                No winner

January                    Robbie McDaid

February                  Robbie McDaid

March                      Paul O'Neill

Under 20s Player of the Month.

Glentoran U20 player of the month for March is Lewis McGarvey.

Lewis missed most of February through injury and the team had a very evident wobble in form in his absence. His return to the panel reinforced how important he is to the backline displaying leadership well beyond his years.

The big centre half also helped his school, St Malachy's College, to the Schools cup on St Patrick's Day and he contributed to two cleans sheets for Northern Ireland against Wales and Scotland. A memorable month on every front.

Well done Lewis
