ACT OF REMEMBRANCE GLENTORAN FOOTBALL CLUB
On Saturday 10th November before our game at the Oval against Ballymena United, the Glentoran family will once again gather at the Thomas Pearson M.M. memorial at the Directors’ Entrance (rear of the main stand) to remember our fallen.
The service, which will be conducted by the chaplain of Glentoran Football Club David Thompson, will begin at 2.20pm with music of a lone piper of the Royal Irish Regiment.
After a short introduction, Major Bert Smith (Irish Guards) will lead us in the words of the oration, before the laying of a wreath on behalf of all ex servicemen and women associated with the club and the country.
We are honoured this year to have in our company, former Irish Guardsman, Lance Corporal Bryan Phillips. Bryan served for ten years in the regiment, and in that time completed tours of duty both in Iraq and Afghanistan. During his last tour, Bryan was the victim of an IED explosive device which resulted in the loss of both his legs and serious arm injuries.
Since his injury, Bryan has involved himself in many fund-raising projects, his latest is called Poppy 100, his intention to raise much need funds for both the Poppy Appeal and the Irish Guards Benevolent Fund. His plan is to lay 100 wreaths at 100 war memorials over this weekend.
Each wreath is sponsored and as a mark of our gratitude to those who gave all, the Glentoran Community Trust have sponsored the wreath to be laid by Bryan at the Oval on Saturday.
Wreaths will also be laid by soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment, based locally in east Belfast at Clonaver Barracks on behalf of our Armed Forces, and by representatives of both Glentoran Football Club and Ballymena United Football Club.
We cordially invite everyone attending Saturday’s game both from Glentoran and Ballymena to join us for this short service as we pay our respects once more, to the bravest of the brave.
