Under 20s: Glentoran v Cliftonville

Fri, 12/08/2016 - 00:15

Glentoran Under 20s followed up their win on Saturday with 3 points over Cliftonville on Wednesday night.

The Glens got off to a great start with a goal in the opening minutes, striker Padraig Hughes tapping in from close range following good work down the right hand side.

Glentoran started the game the same way they did against Dungannon and had numerous chances early on and got a second mid way through the first half.  Paddy Cafolla with a defence splitting pass found Karl Hamill, who struck a shot across the keeper and into the back of the net.

The Glens were unlucky not to be 3 or 4 up by half time, Hughes found himself in front of goal but his shot was saved by the oncoming Cliftonville keeper.  Paul O’Neill was also looking to add to his opening day goal but he headed just over.

Rhys Clougherty when called upon was on hand to keep his team in the game, pulling of a great save to deny a Cliftonville forward

The second half Glentoran took their foot of the pedal and started to play some possession football but they still created chances.  Noel Healy found himself through on goal but he was unlucky not to score.

Cliftonville managed to grab a goal in injury time, a goal mouth scramble lead to Daniel Reynolds scoring to make it 2-1.

The Reds came close to grabbing an equaliser but were denied superbly by Clougherty diving to his left at full stretch to make the save.

Full time score Glentoran 2-1 Cliftonville, a great win for the Glens against last season's league winners gives them 6 points out of a possible 6 in their opening league games.

Next up for Glentoran is a game against Carrick Rangers at the Cliff Larne 17th August.

Manager Mark Clougherty's thoughts on the game: Really pleased with the way we've started with a reasonably young squad. Played some really good football but most importantly the players are developing well, though plenty of room for even further improvement. But the first 2 games have given us a good platform to kick on from”
