Under 20s: Crusaders v Glentoran

Mon, 05/09/2016 - 18:00

Glentoran Under 20s faced off against Crusaders on Saturday looking to maintain their winning streak in the NIFL Premiership Development League.

The Glens started the game at a high tempo having a number of half chances in the opening 15 minutes.

They went ahead shortly after and what a goal it was with nearly every player getting a touch of the ball before Tiarnan McAuley's cross into the box found Padraig Hughes who swivelled and shot to put his side in front.

Glentoran took their foot of the pedal for the remaining 15 minutes in the first half but Crusaders never really threatened, restricting them to long range shots that were gathered comfortably by Dwayne Nelson.

Half Time. Crusaders 0-1 Glentoran

The Glens got their second midway through the second half. McAuley started out right before driving inside towards the goal, he fancied his chances and was delighted to see his shot hit the back of the net.

The third came minutes later, Jack McLaren scoring his third goal of the season from the left wing back position.  He got on the end of a switched ball by McAuley and had a go from 25 yards with his right foot that gave the Crues keeper no chance.

Paddy Cafolla nearly made it four late on in the game but saw his volley saved by the goalkeeper.

A comfortable victory for our Under 20s, a busy period coming up for them with games in the league and Steel & Sons Cup.

Starting XI – D Nelson, Ferrin, Newell, Hamill, McAuley, McLaren, Cafolla, Delaney, Healy, Herdman, Hughes

Subs Used – Lennox, O’Neill, O’Connor

Manager Mark Clougherty's thoughts on the game: “Another great performance from the lads who all showed a great work ethic. Showed they can battle and play good football and scored 3 great goals. Their attitudes have been outstanding, which for a manager and coaching team helps make the job easier”
