Match Preview: Women's League Cup Final

Thu, 27/06/2019 - 21:58

On Friday night Glentoran face Sion Swifts in the NIFL’s showpiece Women’s League Cup Final at Seaview.

The Glens are on a phenomenal roll when it comes to the knock out competitions. As well as winning the Electric Ireland Women’s Irish Cup back in September, tomorrow night’s match will be the first of two finals we have reached this season so far with only one third of the season completed. The players are really looking forward to this occasion and want to put on a good performance in front of live television and our fans.

Our League match in May against Sion Swifts at the Melvin Centre in Strabane finished in a 2-2 draw. On that occasion we led 2-0 in the second half, but Sion fought back with a dubious penalty award and a late equaliser. Our recent run of good form has given the players a high level of confidence going into the final. The squad has a blend of both youth and experience which has paid dividends so far in or League and Cup games. We have also recently added two American players to our squad, Jessie Davis and Jackie Simpson who have settled in very well to both the squad and the banter!

Everyone has been buzzing in training this week and focused on what needs to be done on Friday night to bring the trophy back to the Oval Trophy Cabinet at The Oval. We know from our early season encounter that we will need to be prepared to work hard, win our battles and the result will hopefully reflect our efforts. Our defence has been solid all season and with May Northern Ireland Player of the Month Rachel Rogan and midfielders Nadene Caldwell and Demi Vance all in a rich vein of goalscoring form, the squad is ready for action in a confident and positive mood.

How they reached the final:

Quarter Final: 5-0 v Comber Rec (Caldwell, Gamble, Rogan 2, Marshall)

Semi Final:      1-0 v Crusaders (Mulholland)

Friday’s match will be broadcast live on the BBC and for most of the team this will the first time playing on live Television. Everyone is primed, ready and can’t wait for Friday to come.
