Match Preview - Warrenpoint

Mon, 26/02/2018 - 22:55

Glentoran v Warrenpoint Town

Tuesday 27th February 2018, 7.45pm kick off.

Warrenpoint visit the Oval on Tuesday to play the game abandoned at half time on January 2nd.

We’ve won both matches we’ve played this season – a 2-0 home win in September through goals from Curtis Allen and Robbie McDaid and a 2-3 victory at Milltown in late November when goals from Daniel Kelly (2) and Tiarnan McNicholl saw us through in a tense match after we lost an early two goal lead.  The abandoned match was 0-0 after 45 minutes.

Ronnie McFall said on Monday evening: “We are likely to have two enforced changes from Saturday. Calum Birney has a 2 match suspension while although James Knowles’ knee injury isn’t as bad as we feared on Saturday, tomorrow will probably come too early for him. We’ll assess it but James is unlikely to make it. Better news is that Marcus Kane will be back after suspension and John McGuigan’s knock on Saturday is okay so he’s available.

I was pleased with the performance and result against Cliftonville. It was important to get off to a winning start and it gave everyone – players, supporters and directors – the boost they badly needed. But it was only a start and we’ll need to go into this one with exactly the same approach and attitude to build up a bit more momentum.”

Warrenpoint Town Media Officer Jack Gilsenan had the following to say in advance of the match:  “As usual, this is one of the fixtures, that we as a club, always look at when the fixtures come out at the start of the season, so we are extremely excited about our visit to the fantastic and historic Oval.

In some ways, January was a difficult month for us with the departures of strikers Stephen Murray to Glenavon and Darren Murray to Crusaders. To counter this we brought in Alan O'Sullivan,  a Republic of Ireland U-23 international who shows great physical presence. Former Portadown captain Keith O'Hara has added experience in defence which helps our very young back-line. A special mention should also go to former Glens player Conor McMenamin who has been playing left back all season, but has been moved back to his natural position where he has come up with some vitally important goals. We also have our very own Lorcan Ford playing fantastic football. At just 18 he is a vitally important attacking player for us.

So far in 2018, we have been happy with the lead established over the bottom two and we are now looking to catch Ards, who sit 6 points ahead in ninth place.  On Tuesday our positive attitude going forward should give us confidence in East Belfast. We wish Ronnie McFall all the best for his time at Glentoran, and the Glens for the rest of the season, but hopefully not this match.

Finally we would like to take this opportunity to thank Glentoran supporters Chris Jenkins and Savannah Dodd on their wonderfully kind gesture to Warrenpoint supporters Raime and Marcus Woods, who received a lovely photograph of their dad who sadly passed away suddenly before Christmas. This is what the Irish League is all about”.

Admission to this rearranged match will be free to avoid those who attended the original match being charged again. However there will be donation buckets at the game where supporters who would like to can contribute towards the essential costs of the night such as cost of floodlights, etc.

The Board of Directors at Glentoran Football Club would again request that all supporters travelling to the Oval by private car consider the local residents when deciding where and how to park.
