Match Preview: Larne v Glentoran

Thu, 23/11/2023 - 20:52

Friday 24 November

Kick Off 7.45pm

Tomorrow evening we visit Inver Park to face an in-form Larne side sitting second in the Sports Direct Premiership.

Champions Larne remain unbeaten at Inver Park in all competitions this season, racking up 9 wins from 11 matches to date. With leaders Linfield not playing, last weekend’s 2-0 win over Coleraine - a 5th league win in a row - helped them move within 2 points of the summit as we head towards the half way point of the campaign.

In last season’s games at Inver Park, the sides played out a tepid 0-0 draw on the opening weekend of last season’s campaign in early August. In April of this year, the Glens fell to a rare defeat under the stewardship of Rodney McAree; quick fire goals midway through the first half from Michael Glynn and Lee Bonis settling the game 2-0 in favour of Tiernan Lynch’s men.

Former Hibernian midfielder Scott Allan has not featured in the squad for the last 2 games, but Lynch will have an otherwise strong squad to pick from. Former Glens forward Paul O’Neill has been leading the line in recent games, with Andy Ryan and Lee Bonis having to settle for appearances from the substitutes bench.  Sean Want and Michael Glynn are also currently being kept out of the side by Aaron Donnelly and ex Ballymena United man Sean Graham.

Warren Feeney: “Last week at home to Ballymena we did what we haven’t been doing, by killing off the game early with the important second goal after a good early first. That gave the boys a good confidence boost and encouraged them  to go on to get a very good and clear win. A second league clean sheet in a row was also a positive for us.

Its clear we’re in for a tough game tomorrow night as Larne are a very good team with good players all over the pitch and they’re in very good form. I’ve every respect for what Kenny, Tiernan and the others have achieved there but we are going into this one on the back of a couple of good performances and results so we’ll be positive and look to play the sort of football Glentoran supporters want from us.

We won’t have Marcus, Luke or Jay who are all likely to be out for a while with injuries. That’s a blow as all three boys are important squad members and big players for us. Harry Murphy has also picked up another injury and will be out for a couple of weeks. But the lads who came in last week did very well so we have confidence in them to do the same for us over the next while. ”
