Match Preview: Glentoran v Newry City

Thu, 14/12/2023 - 19:39

Saturday 16th December

Kick Off 3pm.

On Saturday we welcome Newry City to the Bet McLean Oval for  the first time this season and for our second meeting in the Sports Direct Premiership.

After a run of 9 league games without a win - stretching back to a 2-0 victory against Ballymena United at Warden Street Showgrounds in early October - Newry City find themselves at the bottom of the Premiership table, level on points with Ballymena United but with an inferior goal difference to the side they drew 0-0 at home with last weekend. Ballymena are the only side to have scored fewer goals so far than Gary Boyle’s men to date and they have shipped the most goals at the other end, with a total of 49 from 20 games.

In the only league meeting of the teams at the Oval last season, the Glens ran out 3-0 winners at the start of September, second half goals from Bobby Burns, Ally Roy and Paddy McClean on a rainswept afternoon securing the first of 3 league victories over Newry in that campaign. The last time Newry won a league match at the Oval was in December 2009; a Stephen Garrett penalty 4 days before Christmas handing the Mournemen a 1-0 that hugely dented the reigning Champions chance of retaining their crown. Our previous meeting this season was a 4-2 Glens win at the Showgrounds in September. We came out of that one top of the table but badly weakened by long term injuries to Luke McCullough and Aaron Wightman.

Experienced defender Ryan McGivern dropped out of the side for Tuesday’s League Cup Quarter Final defeat at Dungannon Swifts, while former Glentoran Seconds full back Noel Healy picked up an injury in the warm up and was unable to play. Former Portadown striker Adam Salley will be hoping for a recall to the starting lineup after scoring as a substitute at Stangmore Park.

Warren Feeney: “I was pleased with our performance at Solitude last week. It was disappointing to have to go there without Cammy (suspended) and Niall (injured), but the boys approached it brilliantly and showed a lot of tremendous character despite again having an unsettled line up. It was a great game of football between two very good teams and I was pleased with how we competed and bounced back after a poor start when we lost an early goal. It was a real bonus to have a player of the quality of Rhys Marshall back with us after three months. He’s only had three training sessions and needs minutes, but he’s a great asset to the club and I’m looking forward to having him firing on all cylinders before too long.

I watched Newry at Dungannon on Tuesday night. They played very well and were a bit unlucky to lose in extra time. But we know the pressure will be on us all always today so we won’t shy away from what we need to do.”
