Match Preview: Glentoran v Linfield

Mon, 26/12/2022 - 00:09

Monday 26th December 2022

Kick Off 2.00pm

Tomorrow afternoon we meet Linfield for the third time in six weeks and the fourth time this season, hoping for our second Danske Bank Premiership win after two very disappointing intervening defeats in cup semi finals

The Blues come to the Bet McLean Oval on an unbeaten run of thirteen games in all domestic competition, their only defeat in that period was being knocked out of the Scottish Challenge Cup on penalties by Kelty Hearts after a 1-1 draw in Scotland. After a very poor start to the Danske Bank Premiership thy are unbeaten since losing at home to Larne on 22nd October. At that point, the Glens were nine points ahead of our city rivals with a game in hand. We are now four points behind Linfield with two games in hand now, following the recent postponement at Carrick. This is one where the Glens support will be expecting the formbook to go out the window.

Last season’s league fixtures between the sides at the Bet McLean Oval ended with one victory each in very different circumstances. Linfield had a comfortable 3-0 win at the Oval in September then in February a predatory Conor McMenamin second half goal sent the Glens briefly top of the table after a hard-fought contest. McMenamin, of course, will sit this one out due to his recent toe injury.

Glentoran have not lost the Boxing Day fixture for four years and have lost just one in the past six festive derbies. Last season’s match at the National Stadium saw a sterling fightback by ten-man Glens when Jay Donnelly equalised Trai Hume’s first half opener after Conor McMenamin had received a red card. The 2020 game was delayed until early March due to Covid but the Glens travelled across town to record a comfortable 3-1 away win with goals from Jay Donnelly again, McMenamin and Rhys Marshall. Then in 2019 we had an equally comfortable 3-0 home win through goals from Elvio Van Overbeek and a brace from Hrvoje Plum.

This match is a sellout. No tickets will be available at the stadium. For those unable to attend, the game is being shown live on BBC2.
