Match Preview: Glentoran v Ballyclare Comrades

Thu, 29/02/2024 - 21:55

Saturday 2nd March

Kick Off 3.00pm

Quarter Final day on Saturday as we host Ballyclare Comrades, playing for a place in the last four of the Clearer Water Irish Cup.

Now under the management of former Cliftonville defender Stephen Small, Ballyclare Comrades are enjoying a comfortable season in the NIFL Championship, currently sitting in 7th and fighting to claim a place in the top 6 when the league split takes place. They had looked set to challenge for the promotion playoff position, but a run of 7 points in the last 7 games has seen to drop into the middle of the table.

This will be the first Irish Cup meeting between the sides since the 6th Round in the 2017/18 season, when 4 goals from Curtis Allen saw Gary Haveron’s side run out comfortable 4-0 winners at Dixon Park. The last game at the Oval was also a 6th Round tie back in February 2006, when Glentoran - under the stewardship of caretaker manager Tommy Kincaid after the recent departure of the legendary Roy Coyle - emerged as unconvincing 1-0 winners in a Campaign in which we would ultimately end up as losing finalists.

Warren Feeney: “The Larne performance and result last week was very disappointing for us, and it was clear that Larne are where they are for a reason. They were clearly the better team on the night but I’m not letting myself or the boys get too downbeat about it. We were poor in possession for their goals and weren’t able to punish them when they lost possession at the other end, but it was our first league defeat of 2024 after a much better run so I don’t want to be too hard on them. Larne are worthy champions right now and that level is where we need to get to. So we’re determined to get back on track as soon as possible, starting on Saturday.

I’m looking forward to this Irish Cup game. Ballyclare have done very well to get to this point and you can’t afford to underestimate any team that gets to a quarter final. So we’ll show them the respect they deserve, but this is a great chance for either team to get to the semi-final and push to get into the final so we have to make sure we’re the ones who take that chance.

On the player front, we should have a few of the injured lads back in the squad for this one, but we’ve lost Moko to a hamstring injury, which is disappointing for us and for Moko.”
