Match Preview: Crusaders Strikers v Glentoran Women

Sat, 07/10/2023 - 20:03

Sunday 8th October

Seaview

Kick Off: 2.00pm

Glentoran Women travel the short distance to Seaview tomorrow afternoon (kick off 2pm) knowing that a win would clinch the Sports Direct Premiership title for the third time in four years.

Following Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Cliftonville Ladies at Ashfield and Cliftonville’s own away win over Ballymena United Ladies on Wednesday evening, Glentoran currently sit top of the table, six points ahead of the Reds who have a games in hand. Cliftonville are the only other team mathematically capable of winning the Premiership and the head-to-head basis of deciding the title on the basis of two teams finishing on equal points means the Glens need to win at least one of their remaining two games to be confirmed as champions.

But Crusaders Strikers are not to be underestimated. Although eight points behind the Glens, they are very much an in-form quality squad, having won their last eight league games.

In the previous Premiership meeting of the two sides this season, in early June at Ashfield, The Glens ran out 5-0 winners through goals from the international quartet of Joely Andrews, Emily Wilson, Sam Kelly and a double from top scorer Kerry Beattie. However 3 days later the Crues won 2-1 to put the holders out of the Toals County Antrim Cup. Since then the Crues have become the only team to have beaten Cliftonville in the league, thus leaving the Glens as the Premiership’s only unbeaten side so far. So nothing can be taken for granted tomorrow.

Head Coach Kim Turner spoke to www.glentoran.com : “Our game on Monday night v Cliftonville was a tense affair, which was a game of 2 halves. We were more like ourselves in the second half but struggled to get into our flow. I'm so proud of how the players handled the occasion and the result left us in the driving seat. Tomorrow we will approach the game as we have approached every other game all year and go out to play our style and control what we can control.  We are looking forward to the game and hope to see our fans out there supporting us at Seaview.”

Kick Off at Seaview is at 2.30pm.
