Happy Birthday Bertie

Fri, 23/10/2015 - 17:03

Glentoran's oldest player, Bertie Wright, celebrated his 96th birthday this week.

Bertie, vice-president of the Glentoran Supporters Committee 1923, is still a regular attender and most Glentoran games, driving from hi home in Co Armagh to the Oval or travelling with his good friend Alex Richardson.

Born in St. Leonard's Street off the Newtownards Road, Bertie signed for Glentoran during the 1941-42 season and played 214 games for the club, scoring 47 goals. During the 1943-44 season he was part of the successful Glens team which won both the Co Antrim Shield and the All-Ireland Cup. He also captained the side for about a year and a half. Bertie also represented the Irish League on 5 occasions. He scored a penalty in one of those fixtures, a 4-2 defeat to England at Goodison Park in 1947.

Happy Birthday Bertie, from all your friends at the Oval.
