Great, late finish wins another Cup for Glentoran Women

Sat, 29/06/2019 - 02:11

Glentoran Women continued their recent happy habit of scoring late doubles to win cup finals as two brilliantly finished late goals from Northern Ireland international midfielder Demi Vance in the 76th and 77th minutes clinched a deserved 2-0 win over Sion Swifts in the Women's League Cup Final at Seaview.

Player of the Match, Demi was outstanding from start to finish and her two strikes certainly erased the memory of a first half penalty miss after Rachel Rogan had been fouled in the Swifts box.

The Glens had been the better team throughout against an injury hit Swifts side but prior to the opening goal most of the decent sized crowd seemed to have come to accept the likelihood of extra time and possibly penalties. Then on 76 minutes, substitute Samantha Kelly fired in a game changing, pinpoint left-wing cross. Rogan was very unlucky to see her downward header rebound off the post. However, Vance was alert to confidently control and drill home the rebound despite the best efforts of Swifts; Jamaican international Nicole McClure.

Within seconds of the restart, Irish Cup Final heroine Makayla Mulholland played Vance through and Demi showed great composure to slot a low shot past McClure. A goal similar to Darren Murray’s solo effort at Mourneview last month.

Warm congratulations on yet another cup success to all of the team, to General Manager Billy Clarke, Coach Gail Redmond and everyone who has played their part in an excellent start to the season with the Glens second in the table after eight games and already in two cup finals. The whole club is very proud of you!
