Glentoran v Portadown

Fri, 11/09/2015 - 08:40

Glentoran manager Eddie Patterson has demanded a reaction from his players ahead of their clash with Portadown at the Oval this Saturday.

Patterson questioned his side’s mentality after they threw away a one-goal lead and suffered a 1-3 home defeat to Ballymena United last week.

Curtis Allen’s early finish was not enough as goals from Matthew Shelvin, Matthew Tipton and William Faulkner helped the Sky Blues seal their first Premiership win of the season.

Patterson told GlensTV: “Saturday was probably our worst performance of the season.

“After we went a goal ahead we just didn’t organise our defence, and those questions need to be asked to the individuals.

“We’ve got a big game against Portadown this Saturday and we need to put it right.”

Glentoran lifted the Irish Cup the last time the teams met in May, and the Ports will be looking to avenge their cup upset by stealing three points.  The Glens also have to settle a score of their own, as they were unable to beat Ronnie McFall’s men in all their encounters in the Danske Bank Premiership last season.  The highlight game being a 3-1 defeat at Shamrock Park back in November last year, where Calum Birney and Stephen McAlorum saw red.

Patterson said: “What we’ve got to try and do is regroup and get the guys to build on their confidence and get back to the style of football we want to play.

Portadown provide us with a different kind of opposition, they are a physical side.  What we need to do is mix it up like we did against Crusaders and couple that with our own passing game.”

Ahead of the game, there are no fresh injury concerns.  Elliot Morris is back in contention following his injury and Curtis Allen should be in line to start, despite going off last week against Ballymena with a black eye.
