Glentoran has agreed with the decision by NIFL to postpone last night’s Danske Bank Premiership game away to Coleraine.
Speaking on behalf of the club today, Head Coach Mick McDermott said:
“From a sporting perspective we are always disappointed when a game is postponed but we must understand that we are dealing with something much more important, the lives of every person in and around our football clubs.
The NIFL decision yesterday was the only correct one when faced with this unique challenge of Covid issues arising on a Matchday. NIFL’s priority was to protect everyone involved, so the only sensible option was to postpone the match.
The alternative was to show up and play with ‘potential’ cases on the pitch. Obviously, neither our club nor NIFL could accept that as a viable option.
I thank NIFL for their prompt and objective decision - it was for the greater good. It is imperative we do the right thing, all of the time.”
When a new date is arranged it will be confirmed here on www.glentoran.com
