Another Landmark for Skipper Marcus

Wed, 07/02/2024 - 21:00

Congratulations to Glens captain Marcus Kane, who made his 400th appearance for Glentoran in our Sports Direct Premiership draw with Cliftonville last night. 234 0f those games have been as captain. To mark the milestone the club Chairman, Colin Jess presented him with a souvenir commemorative first team shirt with the legend Kane 400 on the back.

Marcus was signed for Glentoran from Linfield by Eddie Patterson in July 2012 after a season on loan at Carrick Rangers. He made his debut in a 3-1 home win over Donegal Celtic on 11th August 2012, scoring his first goal in an away League Cup win over Institute two months later. That season he won over the support with as a second half sub he scored the only goal of the game in our Irish Cup semi-final over Portadown. That led to the first of three victorious Irish Cups for Marcus.

In his nine seasons with the club Moko has played left midfield, centre midfield and centre as well as his established position of left back. He was appointed captain by Gary Haveron for the 2017-18 and in the subsequent six seasons he has retained the role under the same number of managers as one true consistent figure in the club.

Manager Warren Feeney said of his skipper: “Marcus is a great captain and a great clubman who deserves every show of respect he receives from the Glentoran Family. To reach 400 appearances for any club is a great achievement by any player, but to have achieved it at Glentoran in the decade of upheaval at the club is absolutely remarkable. He has been such a loyal person who has been with the club through thick and thin and I’m delighted for him and his family.”

Marcus said this afternoon: “Delighted to make 400 appearances for this fantastic club.

Seems like yesterday I had a meeting with Eddie Patterson to sign for the Glens such a big decision to move from the other side of town to Glentoran but one that I’m glad I made. I am honoured to be on the top 20 all-time appearances surrounded by some proper legends of Glentoran.

Hopefully, I have more to offer the club as 500 sounds better than 400 Forever and ever COYG

Moko is a true hero and much-loved figure around Glentoran, for the wholehearted way he throws himself into all club activities and initiatives as well as his many heroics as player and captain. That respect and love was demonstrated by the superb support he received from the Glens’ support in his 2022-23 testimonial season. Everyone at the club congratulates Marcus on his latest milestone and here’s to him lifting the Irish Cup again in May and a lot more to follow.
