Obituary: Mervyn Bell

The Directors and Management of Glentoran would like to pay respects and offer condolences to the family of Mervyn Bell, who sadly died yesterday.

Mervyn's name is synonymous with our East Belfast neighbours, having spent an incredible 40 years at the club as both player and manager. In his long period at the helm the Duns won no fewer than  27 trophies in 33 years, including nine league titles. He is so revered at Wilgar Park that the newly constructed main stand there was named after him in November 2020 (see photo above).

We have briefly interrupted the announcements about new contracts to pay tribute to a player who in a short time played a very major part in our renaissance as Keith Cowan has left Glentoran after with his contract finishing at the end of the season.

Contract News: Three more years for Paddy

Following yesterday's news on Ciaran O'Connor, the club is now delighted to announce that Patrick McClean has also agreed a further extension and has committed himself to Glentoran until at least June 2024.

Paddy came to the Oval from his hometown club Derry City in July 2019 and immediately became a massive hit with supporters, being voted Man of the Match in our Sadler's Peaky Blinders Irish Cup victory over Ballymena United.

Electric Ireland Women’s Academy League starts tonight

Glentoran Women Reserves their quest for the Electric Ireland Women’s Academy League title on Friday evening (4 June) against Crusaders Strikers U19 at Ashfield Boys High School.

The NI Football League formed the Electric Ireland Women’s Academy League in 2019 to provide a pathway for the best Under 19 players to progress into the top division of women’s football in Northern Ireland.
