Glentoran is pleased to announce the signing of James Ferrin for season 2016/17.

James (26), a central defender, returns to football after a year out in Australia after completing his legal studies at Queen’s University.

James started his career at Glentoran Academy and was Player of the Year for 2 consecutive years before joining his friend Billy Joe Burns at Linfield Swifts. When at Glentoran he played as a 16-year-old in the Foyle Cup winning under 18 team. He then went to study at Newcastle University where he played in the Unibond League for Blue Star. On returning to complete his legal studies he was a regular member of the Queen’s University team that qualified for the Irish Cup semi-final in season 2013/14. He also played county level Gaelic Football for Antrim at a number of age groups.

James said: “I’m really honoured to get the chance to re-join Glentoran. I grew up as a young player here and I’ve supported the club since my early years at the club. Stephen Lowry was my coach at the Glens Academy and when he heard I was back in Northern Ireland he brought me down to meet Alan for a trial and pre-season training. I know Alan is taking a gamble on me as up til now my football ambitions have taken second place to my studies to be a lawyer. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to play at Irish League level, especially after Queens’ Irish Cup run, but I’d taken the decision to focus on my studies and career while many of the lads I grew up with in the game – like Billy Joe Burns, Declan Caddell, Aaron Traynor and Ciaran Caldwell – all made the step up.

I’ll pay Alan back for his confidence in me. I know I won’t walk straight into the team but I’m really looking forward to being coached by Alan who had such a successful playing career in my position. I know he can teach me a lot of the subtleties of centre half play at this level. I’m confident that if I get a chance in the team the Glens supporters will appreciate my ability, commitment and style of play.

Manager Alan Kernaghan said: “I’m delighted to welcome James to Glentoran. He performed very well against St Johnstone and Lurgan Celtic and has earned his opportunity. He brings enthusiasm, hunger and versatility and I’m sure he will prove a great addition to the squad.”
