Glentoran Women play the semi-final of this season’s League Cup with Friday’s visit to Solitude to take on holders Cliftonville. An exciting prospect of an early season meeting between the 2 squads that have dominated Northern Ireland football over the past few years.
The Glens went out to Cliftonville at this stage of the tournament last year with a surprise 3-0 loss at Solitude so the team will be alive to that memory. However on their most recent meeting – in the Electric Ireland Women’s Challenge Cup in October at the National Stadium – the Glens reversed that result as goals from Kerry Beattie, Emma McMaster and Rachel Rogan brought the cup back to East Belfast for the fifth season in a row.
Both sides had a comfortable passage after entering at the quarter final stage. The Reds knocked out Lisburn Ladies with a 6-0 win at the Bluebell Stadium while the Glens had an 8-0 win over Derry City at Ashfield. The scoring that night last week was led by an Emily Wilson hat trick, a double from Kascie Weir and strikes from Jess Foy, Kelly Bailie and Megan Neill.
The other semi final is between Lisburn Rangers and Crusaders Strikers.
