Congratulations to the five Glentoran players who played for Northern Ireland U18 Schoolboys in the final of this year’s Centenary Shield as the unbeaten NI side defeated Wales 2-1 at Blanchflower Stadium to secure the title on Thursday night.
The five players were Owen O’Neill, Casey Smyth, Callan Farley, James Douglas and Jude Johnson. Owen was Man of the Match in the Final and Jude was a goalscoring Man of the Match in the away 2-0 win over Scotland. James scored in the 3-0 home win over England in February. The team also enjoyed a 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland in Athlone.
All these lads have been regulars in the Glens Seconds (U21) side all season and have all contributed strongly to the team’s current 8 game winning run. Casey has been on loan to Championship leaders Dundela since January.
Congratulations also to our own George Feeney who played in the Wales team throughout the tournament, having been born in Wales.
All in all a great achievement by our boys and a great advertisement for the Glentoran Academy.
