Happy Birthday Bertie

Mon, 22/10/2012 - 22:42

Probably Glentoran's oldest surviving player, Bertie Wright today celebrated his 93rd birthday. Bertie, who lives in Laurelvale near Portadown, joined the Glens in the 1941-42 season and who, until his departure at the end of 1948-49, played 214 games for the club. Although he filled what would have been considered a defensive position, Bertie scored 47 goals, twice finishing as the club’s second highest scorer (seasons 42-43 and 44-45 both times with 13 goals). Wright won two trophies with the Glens, the Co Antrim Shield and the All-Ireland Cup, both in the 1943-44 season.

Glentoran 2-1 Glenavon

Sat, 20/10/2012 - 17:20

Glentoran got back to winning ways at the Oval this afternoon despite Eddie Patterson being forced to field an under strength side due to injury and suspension.  Aaron Hogg took the goalkeeper’s jersey after Elliott Morris’s red card last week while Mark Clarke moved to centre back, replacing the injured Colin Nixon, to partner Jimmy Callacher who was making his 100th appearance for the club.  On the plus side Stephen Carson returned to the starting line up after a spell out with injury.

Glentoran v Glenavon- Preview

Sat, 20/10/2012 - 11:27

Today Glentoran face Glenavon in search of victory having lost the previous two league fixtures. One of the key factors for our recent slump in form has undoubtedly been due to the growing number of injuries at the club. This week, there is mixed news with more players joining the list of casualties however one notable return will definitely add a boost of morale to the squad.

Saturday's Celebration

Sun, 14/10/2012 - 19:00

Prior to kick-off on Saturday the players lined up and joined with the crowd in a minute's applause to remember all the supporters, players and officials who are no longer with us but who all played their part over the years in making Glentoran Football Club the institution it is.

Earlier some of the clubs legendary players and managers were introduced to the crowd as they walked onto the Oval pitch once more.
