Weatherup double keeps Glens Seconds top

Glentoran Seconds maintained their position at the summit of the NIFL Premiership Development League with a dominant second-half performance, running out 3–0 winners against Bangor Reserves on a rain-soaked Monday night at Clandeboye Park.

The league leaders went into the fixture four points clear at the top and, after a subdued opening period, produced a clinical display after the break to keep themselves out in front.

With Jack Watt coming in between the posts and Ciaran Rogers-Duffy once again captaining a youthful Glens side, Cal Weatherup and Jack Faloona both returned to the starting XI following their involvement with the Northern Ireland Schools’ Boys squad in Jersey last week.

A scrappy first half saw little in the way of clear-cut chances as persistent rain made conditions difficult, and the sides went into the interval locked at 0–0.

Glentoran raised the tempo after the restart and made the breakthrough on 66 minutes when James McClure delivered a dangerous cross from the right, allowing Weatherup to apply a composed finish to open the scoring.

The striker doubled his tally on 75 minutes, racing onto a perfectly weighted pass from Faloona and driving a confident finish across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.

The Glens rounded off a much-improved second-half performance in the final minute when good work down the right from Reece Bell led to Marcus Fitzsimons’ cross being turned home by substitute Rory Magee at the back post.

The victory moves Glentoran Seconds onto 58 points and keeps them top of the NIFL Premiership Development League.

Next up for the Glens Seconds is the visit of Dungannon Swifts Seconds on Monday 16 February at Ashfield Boys’ High School.
