US International coach working with Glens' 'keepers

Sat, 22/06/2019 - 12:32

Our goalkeepers have had a real boost since the start of pre-season training on Monday with the presence of a very special guest – highly experienced international goalkeeper coach, Des McAleenan. Des, originally from Dublin, is goalkeeper coach for the USA Under 20s squad and has worked at club level in Saudi Arabia and Iran. His club carer most notably included a highly successful nine-year spell at New York Red Bulls where he worked with a number of top-quality goalkeepers, the best known of whom were Tim Howard (Everton & USA) and Ronal Waterreus (Rangers & Holland). Des is working with our three first team squad ‘keepers, Elliott Morris, Dwayne Nelson and Paul McLaughlin

Mick McDermott: “It’s a fantastic boost to have someone with Des’ talent and experience here for a month doing preseason with our Goalkeepers. He’s really top class!  He has just finished the U20 World Cup in Poland with the USA and last year he won the CONCACAF Championship with the USA in Florida. In that tournament his goalkeeper, Brady Scott, won the Best Goalkeeper award. We have two of the most experienced keepers in the league in Elliott and Dwayne but even keepers with their level of experience benefit from fresh ideas and input of the kind Des is bringing. Also, it’s great for young Paul McLaughlin to get one to one time with Des at his stage of development. Des is the quality of coach we need to utilise at the club as we start our climb this season and I know he will be a great help to our lads.”

“The biggest thing (about Des) was his passion for the game. He made coming to work every day fun and exciting, he was passionate about getting better as a coach and passionate about making his goalkeepers better. And it really made a difference.”

– Jon Conway, former New York Red Bulls goalkeeper
