Glentoran midfielder James Singleton is aiming to help the Glens close out 2025 on a high by extending their unbeaten run as they take on Portadown at Shamrock Park in the Sports Direct Premiership on Monday 30th December (kick-off 7:45 pm).
The influential midfielder has been in fine form this season, recently signing a two-and-a-half-year contract extension that will keep him at the BetMcLean Oval until the summer of 2027.
Singleton has been a key figure in the Glens’ midfield, with 21 appearances and a goal to his name, demonstrating leadership and consistency throughout the campaign.
The Glens head into the Shamrock Park clash unbeaten in their last six outings – a run that includes dramatic comeback wins over Cliftonville and Crusaders, as well as a BetMcLean Cup victory against Linfield.
Building on their positive form, the Glens are determined to carry the momentum from their Boxing Day draw with Linfield, a game they largely controlled but were unable to secure the decisive goal, into Monday’s match.
Reflecting on the team’s current form, Singleton highlighted the squad’s growing belief and their determination to maintain their unbeaten streak as they face a tough test against Portadown.
Singleton said: “We’ve been on a really good run recently, and there’s a lot of belief in the squad right now. There’s a real buzz in the dressing room and it feels like we’re starting to see the hard work on the training ground with Declan and the coaching staff paying off.
“Boxing Day was frustrating because we felt we did enough to win the game, but there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. Our focus now is on maintaining that same intensity, work ethic and battling spirit while being more clinical in front of goal to get the result we need against Portadown.
Portadown currently sit just one point behind Glentoran in the table with a game in hand, adding extra significance to Monday’s fixture at Shamrock Park.
The Ports secured a 2-0 victory at the BetMcLean Oval in November, with late goals from Shay McCartan and Ryan Mayse.
However, Glentoran can take confidence from their last visit to Shamrock Park in August, where an injury-time strike from Niall McGinn secured a hard-fought 2-1 win after Jordan Jenkins had opened the scoring.
Looking ahead to the match, Singleton acknowledged the quality of the opposition, but emphasised Glentoran’s focus on continuing their positive run of form.
James said: “Portadown are a strong side, and their league position shows just how well they’ve adjusted since coming up from the Championship. Niall Currie’s done a great job with them – they’re well-organised and disciplined, so we know it’s going to be a tough test.
“That said, we’re confident in our ability and determined to keep this momentum going. It’s about out-working and out-playing them on the night to make sure we come away with the three points and give our fans something to celebrate as we head into 2025.”
The Glens are boosted by the return of striker Jay Donnelly to the squad following his two-match suspension, offering valuable attacking options for the Portadown clash.
However, the team will be without captain Marcus Kane, who is suspended after being sent off for a second yellow card during the Boxing Day Big Two encounter against Linfield.
Singleton also praised the depth and quality in Glentoran’s central midfield, where he has built a strong partnership with Fuad Sule this season.
James added: “I’ve been really enjoying playing more regularly in the middle of the park alongside Fuad. He’s not just a fantastic player who gives everything for the team but also a real leader on and off the pitch. Fuad sets the tone with his professionalism, high standards, and the way he supports the younger players – it’s a massive boost for the whole squad.
“Having Cammy back after his injury has been another big positive. He adds so much energy and quality to our midfield options, which is crucial as we look to keep improving. James is a top young talent with a bright future. He’s already shown what he’s capable of and is only going to get better. We’ve also got creative young players like Finlay and Charlie, who are constantly pushing hard in training and are ready to step up when called upon.”
Singleton was quick to praise the support of Glentoran’s loyal supporters, highlighting the crucial role they have played in the team’s recent successes.
Singleton said: “The fans have been unbelievable all season, especially during those big away wins against Cliftonville and Crusaders, the Cup victory over Linfield and the sell-out crowd on Boxing Day. Their energy and passion lift us every time we step onto the pitch and gives us that extra edge when we need it most.
“We know our fans will come out in numbers again and we’re determined to reward them with another win to end 2024 on a high. Their support has been massive for us all season and we want to continue to give them performances and results they can be proud of as we head into a crucial second half of the season.”
