Shane McEleney departs by mutual consent to join Ballymena United

Glentoran Football Club can confirm that defender Shane McEleney has left the Club following the mutual termination of his contract, enabling him to complete a move to Ballymena United.

McEleney joined the Glens during the January 2025 transfer window following the conclusion of his contract with Derry City.

Since arriving at The BetMcLean Oval, the 34-year-old has made 26 senior appearances in Glentoran colours, including 16 starts and two substitute appearances this season.

The move to Ballymena United will also see Shane reunited with his brother, Patrick McEleney, as he begins the next chapter of his career with the Sky Blues.

Speaking on his departure, Shane McEleney said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Glentoran and I’d like to thank the manager, the staff, my teammates and the supporters for the support I’ve received since I arrived.

“This move to Ballymena United feels like the right step for me at this stage of my career, and I’m excited for the challenge ahead, especially the opportunity to play alongside my brother again. I want to thank everyone at Glentoran and I wish the Club every success for the future.”

Declan Devine, First Team Manager at Glentoran, said: “Following discussions between the player and the Club, we’ve agreed to mutually terminate his contract to enable him to move to Ballymena United.

“Shane has been a top professional during his time with us and I want to thank him for his contribution, both on and off the pitch. It’s been a real pleasure to work with him again and we wish him all the very best for the future.”
