Glentoran Seconds reached the quarter-finals of the Steel & Sons Cup with a 2-1 win over Linfield Swifts at Ashfield Boys’ High School.
Cal Weatherup put the Glens ahead with a composed finish, before Rory Magee headed home the winner shortly after half-time as James Dickson’s side came through a closely contested last-16 tie.
The opening goal began with a throw from goalkeeper Jack Watt. Jamie McCreery moved the ball forward to Charlie Lindsay, whose long diagonal found Weatherup. He took a touch before driving his shot into the far corner.
Glentoran threatened again when Weatherup crossed from the right for Magee, whose powerful header was tipped over by the Linfield goalkeeper.
The Swifts equalised, but the Glens responded soon after the restart. The goalkeeper turned an effort over the bar, and Magee met the resulting corner with a header that bounced down and up into the top corner.
Linfield pressed for another equaliser during the final 15 minutes, but Glentoran defended strongly to see out the win and book their place in the last eight.
