Great, late finish wins another Cup for Glentoran Women

Sat, 29/06/2019 - 02:11

Glentoran Women continued their recent happy habit of scoring late doubles to win cup finals as two brilliantly finished late goals from Northern Ireland international midfielder Demi Vance in the 76th and 77th minutes clinched a deserved 2-0 win over Sion Swifts in the Women's League Cup Final at Seaview.

Player of the Match, Demi was outstanding from start to finish and her two strikes certainly erased the memory of a first half penalty miss after Rachel Rogan had been fouled in the Swifts box.

Match Preview: Women's League Cup Final

Thu, 27/06/2019 - 21:58

On Friday night Glentoran face Sion Swifts in the NIFL’s showpiece Women’s League Cup Final at Seaview.

The Glens are on a phenomenal roll when it comes to the knock out competitions. As well as winning the Electric Ireland Women’s Irish Cup back in September, tomorrow night’s match will be the first of two finals we have reached this season so far with only one third of the season completed. The players are really looking forward to this occasion and want to put on a good performance in front of live television and our fans.

We'll be hoping to repeat both the excellent performance and result from our last visit, in May, to get our season off to the best possible start.

November 1973.

"In Bergen, I will never forget the players in the dressing room at half time, flooding the floor with rainwater, as they squeezed their shirts and shorts out. No moans, just the will to get the job done."

Those were the words of George Eastham, the Glentoran manager, speaking to the Glentoran Gazette after the first leg of the second round, European Cup Winners' Cup tie against Brann Bergen in the rain-lashed Norwegian city.

The game should never have been played. The ground flooded and was battered by incessant rain and winds.

US International coach working with Glens' 'keepers

Sat, 22/06/2019 - 12:32

Our goalkeepers have had a real boost since the start of pre-season training on Monday with the presence of a very special guest – highly experienced international goalkeeper coach, Des McAleenan. Des, originally from Dublin, is goalkeeper coach for the USA Under 20s squad and has worked at club level in Saudi Arabia and Iran. His club carer most notably included a highly successful nine-year spell at New York Red Bulls where he worked with a number of top-quality goalkeepers, the best known of whom were Tim Howard (Everton & USA) and Ronal Waterreus (Rangers & Holland).
