Quest for Cup glory begins at Killymoon

Fri, 11/01/2013 - 16:15

Glentoran were last month drawn against Killymoon Rangers in the 5th round of the Irish Cup. The tie will be played tomorrow afternoon at Mid-Ulster Sports Arena. Directions can be found here

After last season's devastating defeat to lower league opposition in Amateur League club Newington FC, Glentoran will be hoping to put the record straight this season. The Glens haven't been to an Irish Cup final since 2006, and haven't been the winners since 2004.

The team news for tomorrow's game sees Colin Nixon still out following his facial surgery at Christmas. He has been advised not to play contact sport for 4-6 weeks despite returning to training. Calum Birney may make a recovery despite his nasty eye injury picked up against Cliftonville on Monday night. Jay Magee, David Howland and Richard Clarke are all doubts for the game after injuries picked up in recent games. On a more positive note, Stuart Elliott has returned to training following a lengthy spell out and is expected to play a couple of games for the Seconds before resuming first team duty.

Our opponents Killymoon Rangers are playing in The Belfast Telegraph Championship 2 league. They are currently struggling in 15th position out of 16 with just 9 points this season. They suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat against PSNI last weekend but for most of Killymoon's players, this will undoubtedly be the biggest game of their season.

As always with cup ties we expect our opposition to show plenty of energy and make the game as difficult as possible for the team therefore it's vital The Glens turn up on the day and hopefully get the job done.
