Cammy Palmer is relishing a return to action on Saturday as Glentoran travel to take on Dungannon Swifts in the Irish Premiership (Kick-off 3pm).
It’s been a frustrating spell for the Glens with their last two fixtures postponed due to the weather.
Wednesday night’s BetMcLean Cup semi-final against Coleraine went the same way as Sunday’s league game at home to Cliftonville after wind and rain battered the province.
With no league game in a fortnight Palmer is looking forward to getting back in action again as Glentoran bid to keep the pressure on the teams above them in the table.
Cameron Palmer said: “Obviously it’s frustrating when matches are postponed as you do all your preparation but you’ve no game at the end of it.
“They were two big games for us as well in the league and BetMcLean Cup, we were looking forward to playing them.
“We had won our last two games against Glenavon in the league and then Strabane Athletic in the Irish Cup so we were keen to keep that momentum going.
“Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and as frustrating as it is we have to accept it as it’s out of our control.
“Despite there being no games we have continued to work hard on the training pitch because we know we have to be ready again come the next game.
“We are raring to go come Saturday, we can’t wait to get back out onto the pitch again and I’m sure they fans can’t wait to watch a match again too.”
Dungannon Swifts have carried on where they left off last season as they sit comfortably within the top six at present.
Rodney McAree’s men did however suffer a heavy defeat last time out as Carrick Rangers put five past them at Taylors Avenue.
Palmer though is wary of a response from the Swifts this weekend as he continues to be impressed with the way the go about their business.
Palmer said: “Dungannon were excellent last season, one of the real standout teams, and they deservedly finished the season winning the Irish Cup.
“Despite losing several key players at the end of the season they have continued to produce results and performances.
“I know they lost heavily last weekend at Carrick, but we certainly won’t be reading too much into that result.
“We know exactly just how good a team they are, especially at home, and we know how they like to go about their business.
“They have already beaten us twice in the League this season so we don’t need reminding about the threat they pose.
“We have to make sure we go about our business in the right way and are fully focused on the job in hand.
“We know we will have to be at our best to go there and get a result, but we are up for that challenge and relishing it that’s for sure.”
With the recent postponements Glentoran will have a number of rearranged fixtures to fit into the schedule.
And while it means there will be a busy couple of months coming up for Declan Devine’s men, Palmer insists they have to embrace it as they look to continue to fight on three fronts.
Cameron added: “A lot gets made of playing twice a week but we have a big squad and are well managed to cope with this sort of thing.
“The boss and his staff will be making sure they pick the best available 11 for every game coming up so that we’re ready for what is in front of us.
“We’re sitting not too bad in the league table and have games in hand on the teams around us.
“We have to do what we can to turn those games into points otherwise it will be an opportunity missed.
“It won’t be easy, we know that as every team in this league makes you work for every point.
“We can only take care of ourselves and our own business though, so we have to remain honest and hardworking in every game from now until the end of the season.
“We are fighting on three fronts in the League, BetMcLean Cup and Irish Cup and we are determined to go as far as possible in every competition.
“That will only happen if we produce out on the pitch and continue to get the results. That is certainly what we will be setting out to do.”
Palmer is expecting a big travelling support at Stangmore Park on Saturday with fans also desperate to watch their team again.
Palmer concluded: “Yeah I know how frustrating it has been for us players when the games have been called off, but I’m sure it’s magnified even more for the supporters.
“They would have been built up for those two big games against Cliftonville and Coleraine just as we were.
“So, to get the news that the games were off would have been tough to take for them. As players we have to make sure we give them plenty to cheer about when we do play again, which will hopefully be Saturday.
“The fans have been brilliant for us right through the season, they have come out in their numbers and cheered us on.
“I know we have had a couple of frustrating results, but the fans have stuck by us and as players that really means a lot and makes a difference.
“They have helped us get over the line in a number of games, especially when we had to dig deep to get a result.
‘There’s a real appreciation between the players and fans in what we are trying to do and that will stand us in good stead going forward.”
