Glentoran midfielder Cameron Palmer insists the focus is firmly on performance and three points as the Glens prepare to welcome Linfield to the BetMcLean Oval on Friday night for the first “Big Two” clash of the 2025/26 Sports Direct Premiership campaign.

Declan Devine’s side have made a flying start to the campaign, collecting five wins and a draw from their opening six Sports Direct Premiership fixtures that sees the Glens sitting at the top of the table with the league’s best defensive record.

The Glens last match saw them extend their unbeaten run with a commanding 2–0 victory over Ballymena United last weekend, courtesy of first-half strikes from Pat Hoban and Jordan Jenkins.

Palmer, who delivered a player-of-the-match performance at the Showgrounds, has been ever-present at the heart of Glentoran’s midfield this season with his relentless work rate and composure on the ball making him central to Declan Devine’s game plan.

A graduate of the Rangers Academy, Palmer overcame a frustrating first season at the BetMcLean Oval, disrupted by injuries, to establish himself as one of the Premiership’s most consistent midfielders last term.

That progress has carried into the new campaign, with his early-season performances underlining his growing influence at the heart of the Glentoran midfield and on Friday evening he is set to make his 65th appearance for the club.

Cameron Palmer said: “Everyone knows what an occasion a Big Two clash is, the history, the atmosphere, the passion from both sets of supporters. It’s a fixture that means so much to so many people. But for us as players, we can’t let the occasion distract us. At the end of the day, it’s another league game with three points at stake, and that has to be our only focus.

“We’ve started the season strongly and built some good momentum and the challenge now is to keep that going. Linfield are unbeaten as well, which makes this a huge test, but it’s one we’re absolutely ready for. Games like this are why you want to play for a club like Glentoran, with the intensity, the pressure and the opportunity to show what you’re about on the biggest stage in local football.

“The fans have been unbelievable from the very first game, home and away. They’ve backed us in big numbers and their support drives us on every time we step onto the pitch. Friday night will be no different. We know they’ll create an incredible atmosphere and it’s up to us to deliver the kind of performance and result they deserve.”

Palmer has been one of Glentoran’s most consistent performers in the opening weeks of the campaign, starting every league game so far and the 25-year-old says he is pleased with his own form but knows the standards at the club mean there is no room for complacency.

Palmer said: “I’m really happy with how I’ve started the season and it’s always good to be contributing to the team. But at a club like Glentoran you can never rest on that. We’ve got so much quality in midfield and across the squad that you have to be at your very best every single week just to keep your place.

“That competition has pushed me on and I feel in a really good place with my game right now. I’m enjoying my football, I feel confident and the most important thing is that I’m helping the team get results. The challenge now is to maintain that level and keep improving, especially going into big games like Friday night.”

The Northern Ireland U21 international has made 64 appearances for Glentoran since joining in 2023 and signed a contract extension earlier this year, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2026.

He believes the current blend of quality, depth and competition has created the strongest squad environment at the BetMcLean Oval since his arrival, with every player knowing they must be at their very best to earn and retain a place in the team.

Cameron said: “This is without doubt the strongest squad environment I’ve been part of since I arrived at the BetMcLean Oval. The quality we have across the pitch is outstanding and it means you can’t take anything for granted.

“If you’re not at your best in training or in games, there are lads ready to step in and take your place. That competition drives standards every single day and it’s a massive reason why we’ve started the season so well.

“Decky has recruited brilliantly over the summer, bringing in players who not only have real ability but also a real hunger to win. Daniel Larmour and Ryan Cooney have added strength and reliability at the back, while in midfield and attack lads like Liam Burt, Jordan Stewart and Pat Hoban are all proven quality operators with bags of experience at a high level and a mentality that lifts everyone around them.

“When you combine that calibre of signing with the core of players who were already here, you’ve got a squad that’s more competitive than ever and one that’s capable of pushing each other to new levels and bring success to this great club.”

“A game like Friday night demands that same mentality. Against a team of Linfield’s quality, you need every player right at the top of their game, both individually and collectively. We know that if we hit those levels, we give ourselves the best chance of getting the result we want.”

Friday night’s clash at the BetMcLean Oval marks the first meeting of the season between Glentoran and Linfield, with both sides looking to protect their unbeaten league records.

The Glens enjoyed the upper hand in 2024/25, winning two and drawing one of the four Premiership encounters, with Linfield claiming a single victory. Devine’s men also had the edge in cup competitions, eliminating the Blues from both the Clearer Water Irish Cup and the BetMcLean Cup.

Palmer, however, insists that past results will count for little when the sides meet at the BetMcLean Oval on Friday night, stressing that the focus is on putting down a marker for the season ahead and maintaining Glentoran’s early-season momentum.

Palmer concluded: “Linfield are the champions and they earned that last season, so it’s up to us to challenge them every step of the way. Right now, the only focus is Friday night, our performance, our intensity and giving ourselves the best possible chance of taking three points.

“We know they’re a top side with quality all over the pitch, but we’ve prepared well and we trust the work that’s gone in on the training ground. For us it’s about staying disciplined, sticking to the game plan and making sure we play to our strengths. If we do that, we’re confident we can deliver the result our supporters deserve.”
