McEleney eyes success as Glens aim to extend unbeaten run

Fri, 10/01/2025 - 16:02

Defender Shane McEleney is determined to make an immediate impact at the Glens by helping the team maintain their impressive unbeaten run and push for silverware in what’s shaping up to be a crucial period of the season.

Unbeaten in their last nine matches across all competitions, the Glens travel to the Ballymena Showgrounds on Saturday 11th January (kick-off: 3:00pm) to face Ballymena United in the Sports Direct Premiership.

The experienced centre-back, who joined from Derry City at the start of the January transfer window, made his debut in Tuesday’s commanding 2-0 victory over Ballymena United in the BetMcLean Cup Quarter-Final.

McEleney delivered a commanding performance and is now focused on continuing that momentum as Glentoran aim to sustain their excellent form across all competitions.

Shane McEleney said: “I’m delighted to have made my debut and to start with such an important win is a real positive. The squad has been incredible in welcoming me, and there’s a real sense of determination throughout the dressing room to keep on improving as a team.

“This unbeaten run is a down to the hard work and togetherness within the squad, but we know the job is far from finished. January is packed with big fixtures in both the league and cups, and we’re approaching each game with a focused, one-game-at-a-time mindset to ensure we’re ready for every challenge.

“I came to Glentoran to test myself and to be part of a team that competes for trophies. My priority now is to build on my debut performance, contribute wherever I can, and help deliver results for this club and its incredible fans. The support I’ve received from fans since arriving has been outstanding, and it’s clear just how much this club means to them.”

Having joined Glentoran during the winter transfer window, Shane has credited the welcoming atmosphere and strong squad dynamic for helping him settle in quickly.

McEleney said: “Joining a squad with such a positive atmosphere has been fantastic. From the moment I arrived, everyone has been pulling in the same direction, and there’s a real buzz around the club.

“Having familiar faces like Ciarán, Declan, and the two Paddy’s has definitely made the move even easier, but the entire squad has been incredible. It’s exciting to be part of this group of players.”

The Glens’ demanding schedule includes the first cup final of the season against Larne in the County Antrim Shield, a BetMcLean Cup Semi-Final clash with Crusaders, and a Clearer Water Irish Cup Sixth Round showdown with Linfield.

In the Sports Direct Premiership, Glentoran are determined to maintain their strong league form, which has taken them to second place behind Linfield. Starting with Ballymena United on Saturday, the Glens also face crucial league encounters against Larne and Loughgall later this month.

For Derry~Londonderry native McEleney, the intensity of the fixture schedule reflects the standards expected at a club like Glentoran.

Shane said: “Competing on multiple fronts should be the standard for a club of Glentoran’s stature, and this squad is ready to embrace that challenge. We’ve got big games in the league and cups, but there’s a real belief in the dressing room that we have what it takes to keep pushing and delivering results.

“We know what’s at stake, and everyone here is pulling in the same direction. The fans deserve to see this club competing for silverware, and we’re determined to give them plenty to cheer about.”

Despite Tuesday night’s commanding 2-0 victory over Ballymena United in the BetMcLean Cup Quarter-Final, Glentoran are under no illusions about the challenge awaiting them at the Ballymena Showgrounds on Saturday.

Ballymena have already beaten the Glens at the Showgrounds earlier this season and will aim to bounce back after Tuesday’s defeat.

McEleney added: “Tuesday night was a great result, but we know Ballymena are a tough side and facing them at their home ground will be a different challenge. They frustrated us for long periods on Tuesday, and we can’t afford to take anything for granted this weekend.

“Ballymena will be determined to bounce back, so it’s vital we approach the game with the same determination, work ethic, and focus. Matching their intensity, staying disciplined, and capitalising on our opportunities will be crucial if we’re to secure the three points.”

This Saturday’s Sports Direct Premiership clash at the Ballymena Showgrounds will see Shane McEleney face his brother Patrick for the second time in a week. The siblings, who lined up against each other in Tuesday night’s BetMcLean Cup Quarter-Final, will once again put family ties aside as they aim to secure victory for their new clubs.

Shane concluded: “It’s always a bit strange playing against your brother, but once the whistle blows, it’s all about doing your job for your team. Patrick’s a quality player, and I know he’ll be doing everything he can to help Ballymena bounce back from Tuesday’s result.

“For me, it’s about securing another positive result for Glentoran. Hopefully, by the end of Saturday, I’ll have the double bragging rights to take home.”
