Match Preview: Warrenpoint Town v Glentoran

Tue, 23/03/2021 - 00:42

Tuesday 23rd March 2021, Kick Off 7.45pm.

This craziest of seasons throws up another of its peculiarities tomorrow evening when – having played Glenavon twice in the past week – we travel to Warrenpoint for the second time in ten days. This time the fixture list is not to blame as the past two Tuesdays have been the result of weather postponements in January and February.

Our last visit was a tough tussle with two late goals from Robbie McDaid clinching the three points for the Glens. The previous meeting was an uninspiring goalless draw at the Oval in December when both defences were in control pf proceedings.

Since our most recent meeting, ‘point suffered a heavy defeat by Linfield at the National Stadium, but on Saturday only a late equaliser stopped them winning at home over Ballymena United as goals from Adam Carroll and Brandon Doyle gave them a 2-2 draw at home. Manager Barry Gray went on record after Saturday’s match to express his delight at his team’s results this season as their current ninth place – twelve points ahead of Carrick Rangers in the play-off position – mean that had there been relegation at the end of this season, ‘point would be well clear of danger.

Mick McDermott: “We fully deserved our win against Glenavon on Saturday. We started off very well and were well on top before conceding against the run of play. But I was delighted with how quickly we equalised and after that I felt we were well on top for the rest of the game.   As we saw against Ballymena, players can get anxious the longer they go without equalising, so the spirit they showed to avoid that happening was very pleasing. Also a few lads came in on Saturday and did very well - Rory Donnelly upfront who covered left, right and central positions over the course of the game, and Dale and Bigi who both made a great contribution in the midfield as Hrvoje struggled a bit after taking a very nasty tackle in the first half.

Warrenpoint is a hard place to go. They are both hard and talented and they can hurt you with some very good football if you let them or if you lose concentration. Most of our games against them since we came in have been fairly close, so we’ll put out a strong, well prepared team on Tuesday night to get the result we need to further strengthen our league position”.
