Kick Off 7.45pm

Toal's County Antrim Shield

Tomorrow evening we travel to the Bangor Fuels Arena to face Ards in the Quarter Final of the County Antrim Shield.

The current Ards squad includes former Glentoran players Johnny Taylor, Patrick Cafolla and Salou Jallow, while goalkeeper Alex Moore has previous IPL experience with Linfield and loan spells at Dungannon Swifts. Striker Adam Salley, on loan for the season from Portadown, has scored five goals in his past three appearances.

The start of October has given Ards’ league campaign fresh impetus; chalking up large wins (5-2 against Dergview and 4-1 away to Knockbreda) after a difficult run in September that saw defeats to Ballinamallard and Warrenpoint and a League Cup exit at home to Ballymena. They are currently in fifth place in the Championship, recording five wins and four defeats from their opening games.

Ards have won the County Antrim Shield on three previous occasions, the last of these in the 1993/94 campaign, when Roy Coyle’s side defeated Crusaders 4-2 in the Final. Their last Final appearance was in the 2003/04 season, when they went down 2-0 to Linfield.

Our last meeting with Ards was two seasons ago at the same stage of this tournament when we won5-4 on penalties after a drab scoreless draw at the Bet McLean Oval. Our last visit to Bangor was a 1-1 league draw in April 2019, in Mick McDermott’s second game in charge. Only Marcus Kane and Willie Garrett remain of the fourteen Glentoran players who appeared that day.

Mick McDermott: “After Friday’s excellent performance v Carrick in the league, we now have another cup match and a chance to get to a semi-final. We will prepare as always and show every respect to Ards. Matthew Tipton teams are always good footballing sides and we expect this Ards team to be the same on the night.

In the last round some of our younger players performed well and have earned a chance to play again.”
