Glentoran midfielder Charlie Lindsay has challenged both himself and his teammates to step up and deliver a statement performance as they prepare for a crucial Sports Direct Premiership clash against Carrick Rangers at Taylor’s Avenue on Saturday (Kick-off: 3pm).
The Glens were last in action on Wednesday night, playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Glenavon at the BetMcLean Oval. Despite producing a spirited second-half comeback to overturn a two-goal deficit and take the lead, Declan Devine’s side were left frustrated as Glenavon struck back to deny them all three points.
However, Glentoran remain second in the league table, with Larne and Dungannon Swifts both three points behind in third and fourth, respectively. With just three matches remaining before the league split, the battle for automatic European qualification is reaching its defining stage.
Saturday’s trip to Carrick Rangers marks the first of three decisive fixtures before the split, followed by a showdown with Larne next Tuesday night and a home clash against Crusaders next Saturday
Lindsay, who returned to Glentoran last summer following spells at Rangers and Derby County, has predominantly been used as an impact player this season. However, he was handed a start against Glenavon on Wednesday night, delivering an industrious performance in midfield.
Now shifting his focus to Saturday’s trip to Carrick, the young midfielder understands the importance of the weeks ahead and believes the squad must produce a commanding performance this weekend.
Charlie Lindsay said: “The first half on Wednesday night simply wasn’t good enough – there’s no excuse for it. Maybe there was a bit of a hangover from the cup final, but Declan and the coaching staff warned us not to let that happen. We responded well after the break and showed real character to fight back from 2-0 down. But when you put yourself in a winning position, you have to see the game out.
“Every point is crucial now. We’ve got three games before the split and we need to get back to winning ways and build momentum. That has to start on Saturday at Carrick. It’s always a tough place to go, but we have to play with confidence, aggression and quality to make sure we get the result we need.”
Glentoran know the threat Carrick Rangers pose, having faced them three times this season. The Glens edged a 3-2 Premiership thriller at Taylor’s Avenue in August, secured a 2-0 win in the County Antrim Shield Quarter-Finals in October and were held to a 1-1 league draw at the BetMcLean Oval after a stoppage-time penalty save.
Lindsay knows his side must be fully prepared for another tough test on Saturday but insists the squad is determined to produce a performance worthy of three points.
Lindsay said: “We’ve already had some tight games against Carrick this season and we know what challenges they will bring. They’re a well-drilled side under Stephen Baxter and battle for everything.
“They have plenty of experience in their squad and players who know how to grind out results. A few of their lads know this club well and will be desperate to get a result against us, so we have to be ready for that challenge.”
“That said, we have to focus on ourselves. We have a squad full of quality and we know how to handle these kinds of games. It’s about being disciplined, matching their fight and making sure we impose ourselves from the first whistle. We need to go there and make sure we come away with three points.”
A lifelong Glentoran supporter, Lindsay captained the club’s dominant 2004 Academy team, playing alongside Aaron Wightman and Jonny Russell, before earning a move to Rangers at just 16. Following a spell at Derby County, he returned to East Belfast on loan last season before making the move permanent in the summer.
Since rejoining the Glens, the 21-year-old midfielder has made 23 appearances this season, scoring five goals. While he has had to be patient for opportunities, Lindsay remains fully focused on cementing a regular starting spot.
Charlie said: “Glentoran has been in my blood since I was a kid. Playing for this club means everything to me. My family are lifelong supporters and I want to do everything I can to help get this club back to where it belongs.
“Of course, I want to be starting every game, but I also recognise that I’m still developing and adapting to senior football after playing at academy and U21 level in Scotland and England.
“I know I have to keep pushing myself, working hard every day and proving to Declan that I deserve a regular place in the team. I’m learning so much from Declan, Paddy and Tim, and Paddy has been particularly influential in helping me develop my attacking play.
“It’s also been special to be back on the pitch alongside Aaron and Jonny after coming through the Academy together. If we can bring success back to this club, it would be a huge testament to the Academy and the pathway it provides for young players.”
