Legend's XI : Johnny Jameson (part two)

Mon, 08/06/2020 - 02:13

Part two of Johnny Jameson’s Legends XI deals with the latter half of Jamie’s long career at Glentoran. Have a bit of fun deciding which one would have won a match between them.

6. JOHNNY JAMESON

(Part Two: 1989-1996)

Alan Paterson (Goalkeeper)

Thank you, Paddy, for staying until 1995, 23 years after your debut. Even longer than I’d thought.

George Neill (Right Back)

I’ve always been a good sprinter, but George was a flying machine. He showed that in NI Schools sprint championships as well as in football. Well done captain.

Conor McCaffrey (Left Back)

1990 was Conor’s first full season as a first team player, and his form was very good. Also, he was scoring vital goals from set piece positions, with the sort of great left foot we’d just lost with Jimmy retiring.

Barney Bowers (Centre Back)

Barney played a big part in our trophy winning years in the mid-80s. Then in later years he spent time as sweeper in central defence. It’s amazing that he did the things he did, scoring all those goals, considering the two occasions he broke his leg. Well done Barney!

John Devine (Centre Back)

I always considered John to be a very confident centre half, even on his debut on Boxing Day 1987 as an 18-year old. A U21 international who also got a full cap with us. Well done John!

Andy Mathieson (Midfield)

Andy spent three years with Man Utd then came home to spend over a decade at the Oval. He quickly established himself and won plenty of medals.

Johnny Jameson (Midfield)

Like Barney, I also had broken legs!

Raymond Morrison (Midfield)

I’ve just watched the YouTube “Nuts About Glentoran” video. He played in every one of our 80s Irish Cup Final wins and I loved playing with him.

Gary Macartney (Striker)

Macart arrived from the RUC in the old B Division and made such an impact right away. His 163 goals made him the Glens’ fourth highest goalscorer since World War Two. Great stuff and a great player

Billy Caskey (Midfield)

I had heard so many things about Billy Caskey when he was in the States and when he came home I soon realised it was all true. Not only a smashing player but a great person and friend. Thanks, Casko!

Justin McBride (Forward)

I’m sitting at home in Carrickfergus right now, thinking of Justy plying on ice both here and in Dundonald. Thankfully Jacko signed him and he went on to play 330 matches and score 132 goals for the Glens. Well done Justy!
