Larne Women 0-5 Glentoran Women

Fri, 27/09/2024 - 23:23

A first half double from Emily Wilson paved the way for this victory with a late 3 goal burst putting the 3 points beyond doubt in this evening’s Sports Direct Women’s Premiership game at Inver Park..

Northern Ireland international Wilson opened the scoring on 10 minutes when she finished from an excellent right-wing cross from Rachel McIntyre. The Glens took a 2-goal lead into the break after Wilson scored with a characteristic long-range effort just after the half hour.

The Glens did put Larne under plenty of pressure but despite their domination further goals wouldn’t come due to a combination of poor finishing and a good performance in the Larne goal from ex-Glens youth keeper Cerys Sharkey.

The game was finally made safe with 9 minutes to go when top scorer Demi Vance sent the keeper the wrong way and comfortably slotted it home. That was the signal for the floodgates to open as Aimee Kerr then pounced on a rebound at the edge of the box to   place it well beyond the keeper’s reach to the bottom left-hand corner.

On the blow Demi Vance notched her second of the night and her 18th of the season when she broke through the Larne defence and slotted home.

We now sit 3 points behind Cliftonville at the top of the table with 3 games left. The Reds are at home to Lisburn Rangers Ladies on Sunday and we travel to play Derry City on Wednesday night. This league comes down to head-to-head results against the top 2 teams. That means if both teams win their other games, next Sunday’s meeting between the top 2 at Solitude will be without doubt the biggest game of the season. For the Glens to retain the title we will need to win that game by at least 2 goals. So the girls will need a big Glens crowd behind them on the night. Be there!
