Glentoran missed out on the chance to go second in the Sports Direct Premiership after a floodlight failure at the BetMcLean Oval led to their game against Larne being abandoned 15 minutes into the second half.
With the game scoreless at the time, the Glens had the upper hand and would have fancied their chances of getting a winner, but it wasn’t to be, and sides will likely have to do it all again on another date.
It was a bright opening for the hosts, and they felt they should have had a penalty awarded with just nine minutes on the clock.
Cameron Palmer and Tomas Cosgrove came together in the Larne box. Cosgrove appeared to handle the ball before referee Chris Morrison had blown his whistle for a goal-kick, but the home team’s appeals for a spot-kick were waved away.
With 26 minutes gone the visitors had their first real chance. A long ball forward deflected off Kodi Lyons-Foster which sent Conor McKendry away down the right. The attacker cut the ball back for Joe Thomson, but Jonny Russell heroically threw himself at the ball to send it out for a corner.
As Larne grew into the game, it took a superb tackle from Frankie Hvid to deny Benji Magee a goalscoring opportunity on the stroke of half-time. However, there was still time for James Singleton to put the ball in the net, from a well-timed through ball from Jay Donnelly, but the linesman’s flag went up to signal offside.

Ten minutes into the second half and the Glens thought they had scored an opener. Russell played the ball across the face of goal for David Fisher, who was just inches away from making contact.
There were to be no further chances for Declan Devine’s men though, as moments later the floodlights failed and after consulting both managers, Morrison abandoned the fixture. But whilst it will take some time to re-arrange this fixture the sides face-off once more in Tuesday’s Co Antrim Shield Final at Seaview.
