Daniel Larmour wants Glentoran to give the Oval crowd something to shout about against Carrick Rangers on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) after last weekend’s win at Cliftonville.
With the Glens attacking towards their travelling fans at Solitude, Jordan Jenkins struck an 83rd-minute winner. Glentoran then held on with ten men to secure a 2-1 victory and Larmour says the supporters were on the players’ minds as they pushed for the goal.
“We were shooting towards them in the second half and we spoke about giving them something to shout about,” said Larmour. “Thankfully we got the winner. They were brilliant the whole game.”
For the defender, the way Glentoran protected their lead mattered almost as much as the goal itself. The result came after a difficult week for the club and gave the squad a lift ahead of Saturday’s return to The Oval.
“It was really important to get three points on the board again,” he said. “We went down to ten men and were able to hold out for the 2-1 win, so the mood has been good this week.
“We had to dig in away from home under difficult circumstances. Cliftonville are a good side and we hadn’t won in a while. It was pleasing to get the win.”
Larmour said Tim McCann and Paddy McCourt have helped the players stay focused while they continue to lead the team.
“They’ve been really good,” he said. “It’s been nice and relaxed over the last week or two. The players are enjoying it and we’re just trying to focus on getting three points every week.”
Carrick were Larmour’s first senior club, but familiarity offers no expectation of an easy afternoon. He pointed to their experience and the difficulty Glentoran had in breaking them down last season.
“Carrick are a good side with a lot of experience in this league,” he said. “We had tough games against them last year. We’re going to have to be on it on Saturday and take our chances when they come because they’re tough to break down.”
Last weekend’s win gave the away fans their moment. Larmour hopes the players can give those at The Oval one of their own.
“The fans come out and support us every week, and the players really appreciate it,” he said.
“Hopefully we’ll give them something to shout about this week.”
