Larmour hails Glens character ahead of Irish Cup test

Daniel Larmour has hailed Glentoran’s character as they prepare to face Drumaness Mills in their rearranged Clearer Water Irish Cup sixth round tie at the BetMcLean Oval on Tuesday evening (Kick-off 7.45pm).

The Glens showed their resilience on Saturday fighting back from a goal down to claim all three points against Ballymena United thanks to Aaron McEneff’s brace.

Attention now switches to the Irish Cup with Larmour insisting there is a real desire in the camp to go deep in the competition.

Daniel Larmour said: “There is a real belief and desire in the squad at the minute to win every game we play in.

“That obviously comes from the results but also from what Declan and the coaching staff have instilled in us.

“When we step out onto the pitch, we have belief in ourselves to go and win the game and we have the players that can make that happen.

“It’s no coincidence that we have fought back in a number of games when we have fallen behind.

“That says a lot about our character. When something doesn’t go our way in a game we don’t let it get us down.

“Instead, we focus on what we need to do to get back into the match and it has paid dividends for us.

“We started the game well against Ballymena on Saturday, but we couldn’t get the goal and then we end up falling behind against the run of play.

“It would have been easy for us to feel sorry for ourselves and not focus on what we needed to do to get back in the game.

“We kept plugging away and continued to do the things that were getting us joy and it paid off in the end.

“Aaron scored the penalty right on half-time and added a second after the restart to put us in front and it was no more than we deserved.

“That only happens though if you keep working hard and have belief in what you are trying to do.”

After clawing background in the Sports Direct league the Clearer Water Irish Cup takes centre stage for Glentoran on Tuesday evening as they welcome Drumaness Mills to the BetMcLean Oval.

Larmour knows the Glens cannot afford to take the NAFL Premier Division side lightly or they could end up on the wrong side of a cup upset.

Larmour said: “The last thing we can afford to do is go into this match not fully focused on the task in hand.

“That’s when you end up with egg on your face and out of the competition as reputation counts for nothing in the cup.

“Drumaness are here on merit, they have won the games they needed to reach this stage of the competition and we will give them the respect they deserve.

“We will be approaching this game like we do every other match. We will be well prepared, have our homework done on the opposition and be ready to work hard to get the result.

“It will be a similar experience for us like the last round against Strabane Athletic. That night we had to be patient and wait for the opportunities.

“They came here without any fear and took the game to us and I fully expect it to be the same for Drumaness.

“There’s no pressure on them, they can come here and play with freedom. We cannot afford to let them get a hold of the game.

“As the hosts we have to set the tempo from the start and try and put the game to bed as early as we can.

“We are already through to the final of the BetMcLean Cup and we want to progress in this competition and get as far as we can.

“There’s a real desire amongst to squad and coaching staff to bring more silverware back to the BetMcLean Oval.

“When that is your focus and common goal you work hard as a team to achieve it. You can see we have that drive to go on and do it, we want to make it a season to remember in more ways than one.”

It’s a big few weeks coming up for Glentoran with the Big Two clash with Linfield coming up on Saturday before they take on north Belfast sides Cliftonville and Crusaders in quick succession to finish the month.

It’s a busy schedule for Declan Devine’s men but Larmour is relishing the challenge that lies ahead for them.

Larmour added: “As a player you want to play in the big games and at this stage of the season every game carries so much weight.

“We’ve played Coleraine and Larne in recent weeks and put in good performances which shows where we are at.

“We have big games coming up over the next few weeks against Linfield, Cliftonville and Crusaders.

“We know the importance of these games as they will have a big impact on our season, and we know how we have to approach them.

“We can’t afford to look to far ahead ourselves though either. We have to focus on what’s in front of us as the next game is our most important one.

“That’s Drumaness Mills and it carries the same weight for us as the league games coming up.

“We have to focus on what we need to do to come out of these games in a positive manner and continue to build the momentum we have.

“The fans will have a big role to play for us in all this as well. They have been a big inspiration for us all season and have helped us get over the line whenever we’ve had to dig deep to get a result.”
