Kane insists Glens must deliver in final day battle

Marcus Kane insists Glentoran’s only focus is on what they need to as they prepare for the final game of the Sports Direct Premiership season against Coleraine on Saturday evening (kick-off 5.30pm).

The Glens know they have to pick up all three points against the Bannsiders if they are to have any chance of lifting the Gibson Cup for the first time since 2009.

For that to happen Declan Devine’s side also need leader Larne to lose at Dungannon Swifts, but Kane says Glentoran have to do their job and see where it takes them.

“It’s an incredible finish to the season with three teams still in with a shout of the title,” said Kane.

“Obviously Larne are in the driving seat as they are three points ahead with one game left to play, but anything can happen.

“We can’t afford to think about what is going to happen in their game however. Our full focus has to be on what we need to do.

“It’s simple, we have to go to Coleraine and win and whatever happens after that happens. If we start wondering what might happen in a game which is outside of our control then we will end up tripping ourselves up.

“We can only control the controllables and that’s our game and that is the only thing we are focusing on.

“It would be a tough pill to swallow if Larne did slip up at Dungannon and we didn’t take advantage of it.

“So, the message is plain and simple from the staff, and we as players know we have to do what we need to do first and foremost.

“The mood in the camp is good and we will go to Coleraine with confidence knowing that if we work hard and perform to the standards we have set all season then we will be in with a good chance of picking up the win we need.”

Glentoran are unbeaten against Ruaidhri Higgins’ side in their four meetings so far this season with three wins and a draw.

The Bannsiders though are in good form with four wins in their last four games and Kane knows it’s going to be a tough test at The Showgrounds on Saturday as their hosts also harbour hopes of securing the league title.

“We have had some big results and performances against Coleraine already this season,” said the club captain.

“They have all been very tight affairs but in all of the games we have shown a lot of character to bounce back whenever we have had a setback.

“We will need that again on Saturday as they will no doubt have periods when they will be on top and it will be important for us to make sure that we stay in the game.

“When you play against the top teams you know it’s very unlikely you are going to dominate from start to finish, so when you are under the cosh you have to work hard and get through it

“We have to make sure that we show the resilience which has helped take us to where we are this season.

“This is the last 90 minutes of the league campaign and we want to make sure that we go out on a high.

“Coleraine are a very good side and are the form team, so it’s probably the toughest game we could have had at this stage.

“But this is what you want as a player. You want to be involved in games like this against the best side with everything on the line.

“It’s now up to us to make sure we do everything we need to do. It’s all set up for an unbelievable finale.”

A sell-out crowd is expected at The Showgrounds and Kane wants the Glentoran fans to make their presence felt in the ground.

“It will be packed to the rafters with both teams still in with a shout of the title and pushing for automatic European qualification,” said Kane.

“Obviously we would have loved to be playing at the BetMcLean Oval, unfortunately we aren’t, but I know our fans will be out in force and making themselves heard.

“We will need that so much given what is at stake. We will need our fans to make it like a home game for us and get behind us when we need it on Saturday.

“Our fans have been immense all season and I know they will be again on Saturday. So, I would say bring your flags and banners and bring the noise.

“As players, we certainly know what we have to do and we are determined to get the job done.

“We are excited by the challenge and we will take a lot of confidence in how we have performed this season to have put ourselves in this position.”

Glentoran’s away allocation for the Sports Direct Premiership meeting with Coleraine at The Showgrounds on Saturday night is sold out.
