Marcus Kane has praised James Douglas for making the most of his opportunity in the Glentoran side ahead of Saturday’s BoyleSports Premiership meeting with Bangor at The BetMcLean Oval (kick-off 3pm).
Douglas has stepped into the team during an opening period disrupted by injuries, and Kane believes the midfielder’s performances have demonstrated the quality available throughout Declan Devine’s squad.
“Dougie has been brilliant since he stepped in,” said the Glentoran captain.
“Sometimes it takes a few injuries for players to get their opportunity and it’s good that he has taken his.
“He maybe didn’t feature as much as he would have wanted last season, but he’s such a talented player and it’s great to see him back in the side.”
Although Kane acknowledges the effect of having several players unavailable, he insists Glentoran possess sufficient strength and experience to meet the demands placed upon them.
“It has been tough, but it’s not an excuse,” he said.
“We’ve got a big squad with plenty of experience and that shouldn’t disrupt a squad like ours.
“We’ll look stronger when a few of the boys return, but we have good depth. The players who come into the team have an opportunity to show what they can do.”
The Glens return to The BetMcLean Oval determined to improve on a difficult opening to the league campaign.
Kane admits performances and results have fallen below the standards expected within the dressing room, prompting frank discussions between the players and coaching staff.
“It probably hasn’t been good enough,” he said. “Coming out of the European games, we didn’t carry any real momentum into the league.
“We haven’t started the way we wanted to and we need to begin putting that right against Bangor on Saturday.
“We’re hurting. It has been tough and there have been a few choice words between the players, the manager and the staff.
“We’ve had open and honest conversations about where we need to be better. Hopefully, three points can change the feeling around the ground and really kick us on in the league campaign.”
Kane expects Bangor to present a physical and fiercely competitive challenge in East Belfast.
The experienced defender believes Glentoran must match the visitors’ intensity before attempting to impose their football on the contest.
“It’s going to be aggressive and that’s something we’ll have to stand up to,” he said.
“Every time we’ve played Bangor, it has been a battle. We need to win that battle first before we can play our football and go on to win the game.”
The captain also called on the Glentoran support to play its part by creating a powerful atmosphere at The Oval.
“It’s massive to have the fans behind us,” he added. “In this league, if you stand still, you can quickly find yourself dropping down the table while other teams build an advantage.
“It’s important that we get three points and produce a good result at home.
“Stay with us, keep getting behind us and make it loud. When The Oval is rocking, it’s a different place. Get down in numbers and support the lads.”
