Johnson strike seals win on pre-season opener

Glentoran opened their 2025/26 pre-season campaign with a 1-0 win over East Belfast at Inverary Park, courtesy of a composed second-half finish from Academy graduate Jude Johnson.

Back in action following a two-week return to training, Declan Devine named two different starting XIs across each half, using the fixture to build fitness and assess his squad.

The first-half line-up featured several senior players, including captain Marcus Kane, Shane McEleney, Frankie Hvid, Charlie Lindsay and Jordan Jenkins, while Josh Kelly made his long-awaited return after recovering from an ACL injury.

Glentoran controlled the tempo for much of the opening period, although East Belfast delivered a dogged and resolute display. Jordan Stewart, making his first appearance since rejoining the club, struck the post with a low effort, while Aaron Wightman went close following a well-worked move.

Jenkins and David Fisher led the press from the front, with Wightman and Jonny Russell pushing forward at every opportunity. Hvid impressed with a composed display at the back.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Glens enjoying the majority of possession, although East Belfast continued to frustrate with their organisation and work rate. Johnson, who recently signed a new contract at The BetMcLean Oval, broke the deadlock on 65 minutes, stepping past a defender in the box before finishing calmly into the bottom corner.

There were further positives as Harry Murphy looked assured on his return from a loan at Glenavon, while Christie Pattisson delivered a number of dangerous crosses. Cameron Palmer and James Douglas worked well together in midfield, helping Glentoran control the tempo.

Academy players Luke Chapman, Callan Farley and Ciaran Rogers-Duffy all featured throughout the second half, with Rogers-Duffy particularly impressive at the back. The trialist goalkeeper was rarely tested, as Glentoran limited East Belfast to few clear chances.

With a clean sheet, valuable minutes across the squad, and a first win of the summer, Devine’s side made a positive start to pre-season.

Full-time: East Belfast 0–1 Glentoran

Glentoran would like to thank East Belfast for hosting the match and wish them the very best of luck for the season ahead.
